Complete Scouting Overhaul | Madden 21 Wishlist

    Hey guys,

For me personally, I feel like scouting is currently one of the weakest aspects to franchise mode so I recently decided to go through and mockup some concepts of how I think scouting should be handled and could be improved to make it a much more interesting and useful experience. I made a video on this that can be found here, but for those that prefer not watching me talk for 15 minutes about a new scouting system, I'll try to consolidate the idea into writing here.

    Regional Scouts

You scouting department would consist of four regional scouts (East, West, Midwest and South) with varying skills and traits.

So first off here, we start with Regional Scouts which would be responsible for scouting prospects within their given region. Each scout would have skills and traits to differentiate their skill as well as making them more unique. Those skills/traits would be Evaluation Ability, Reputation, Specialty and Bias/Influencers.

Evaluation ability is pretty straightforward and would dictate the accuracy of the information you were receiving. A scout that had an Elite evaluation ability you'd be able to pretty much completely trust and take his reports at face value. Meanwhile, a scout with poor evaluation ability would be more likely to provide inaccurate information or be more likely to be "wrong" on players. More on this later.

Reputation is again pretty straightforward in that it would essentially work like OVR does for players. In reality it really means nothing outside of how scouts are paid and coveted. Scouts with Elite reputations would garner more money and more offers from other teams. You could also use reputation as a sort of DEV trait for scouts as well where scouts with higher reputations would be more likely to progress, while those with lower reps would be more likely to stay the same or even regress.

Specialty would be the position, position group or side of the ball that the scout specializes in. This would most likely be handled in a similar fashion to how it currently works where players at a scouts specialty would take less time/points to scout but you could also have a scouts specialty result in a boost in evaluation accuracy as well.

Retired players would show up in the scouts pool after a period of time similar to how retired players would become coaches in the older Madden's.

Something I think that would be cool and a little throwback to older Madden's is what you see above and that's retired players coming back and becoming scouts. So over time instead of just having a pool full of fictional faces and names, you start to get an influx of real-life players that have specialties related to the positions they played.

A very rough example of how a scouts Bias/Influencers can affect their grade of a prospect.

Bias and influencers would be what scouts prioritize or value more than anything else and you could have a number of different things here but I ultimately decided on Athleticism, Intangibles, Potential and Talent. So a scout with an Athleticism bias is going to grade players that are great athletes at their position higher than normal and guys that are below average athletes lower than normal. A scout with an intangibles bias will grade players that have better intangible ratings higher than normal while a player with lower intangible ratings will be graded much lower than normal.

A mockup of how the scouting screen could look with these changes.

Before I get to the scouting reports I want to show the scouting screen here and start over on the left side with some quality of life improvements where you get some information on the current draft class that you normally wouldn't. Things like draft depth and the strongest and weakest positions are things that teams would have a good idea about and having that information can help dictate how you approach something like re-signings and free agency. Maybe you have a free agent WR and with a deep WR class you let him walk. Or maybe it's a really week WR class so you're more hard pressed to re-sign that WR because you know it'll be harder to replace him. That's also something that could play into contract negotiations where that WR might have more or less leverage depending on the situation.

The next major change is in the projections where there would be a more universal scale. Rather than have players slotted 1 through 32 in each round players would be projected on a universal scale and you'd see more kinds of projections like Top 5, Top 10, Late 1st, 1st-2nd, 2nd-4th, etc.

Then to the right of that you see another major change with a progress bar that indicates how much a player has been scouted and how close they are to being fully scouted. You'll also see when you choose to scout a player you'll see the assigned scout in yellow.

    Scouting Report

This is how each prospect would look like at the beginning of scouting. Each would have, at the very least, a couple of bullet points. No more going into the draft with just a combine grade on a ton of players.

I'm going to start over on the right side with the Prospect Profile which gives you some basic information on the prospect. You get a look at their player grade and projection. A player comparison that gives you an idea of a real-life player the prospect most resembles. A short term projection and long term projection as well as a current roster projection to give you some insight into his potential career arch. And then lastly you have a draft ceiling and draft floor that gives you a rough estimate of where the player is expected to be selected.

Each bullet point that you get in the scouting report would be selected from a bucket that rates the attribute/trait from poor to Elite. Catch In Traffic is the example used here.

So back to Evaluation Ability for scouts. The information that you get in the players scouting report will describe a players traits/attributes and your scouts evaluation ability will dictate the range of inaccuracy for the statement that you receive. So for Catch in Traffic above you have a number of statements that tell you his rating is anything from Poor to Elite. For the sake of the argument we're going to say that "Will gain immediate trust with any quarterback for his ability to make tough catches" is deemed the perfect description.

Rough example of the difference in range of statements you could receive from a poor (red) scout and Elite (blue) scout.

So above is a very rough example of the accuracy of evaluation ability. If you have an Elite scout (blue), the chances of getting a very accurate statement are much higher with a much better chance at receiving that 'perfect' statement. Meanwhile if you have a poor scout (red), the range is going to be a lot wider and while the chance to receive the 'perfect' statement is still there, it's a lot more unlikely and the chance for a potential mis-evaluation are a lot higher.

Each week that you scout a player you're going to get 2-3 bullet points for a player until he's fully scouted like seen above.

So as you build a players scouting report you have to be cognizant of your scouts ability but by the time you've fully scouted a player you should have a much better picture of a prospect than you currently get and with some added uncertainty that you can influence by who you have on your scouting staff.

A look at how a prospects physical tab would appear when scouting first began.

One of my biggest issues with the current scouting system is that you have virtually no clue into a player's physical ability until you get to the combine. You could be scouting running backs or wide receivers with 84 speed all year long and wasting points and time scouting players you wouldn't even consider drafting. So that's where the SPARQ score comes in which is a rating that attempts to quantify athleticism and would at least give you a rough idea of a players physical ability before you began scouting them.

The offseason would include both the NFL Combine as well as collegiate pro days.

In addition to the combine there would also be collegiate pro days. The NFL Combine would work just like real-life where there'd be around 330 players with combine data and around 120 without out. This creates possibilities for players to maybe have a data discrepancy where they run faster at the combine or their pro day so you have to wonder what you're actually getting. There can also be situations where a player is injured and misses both so the SPARQ score is all you really have to go off of.

Medical tab showcasing a prospects health and injury risk.

This is the medical tab and would take some significant changes to how injuries are handled so I won't talk about it too much but basically it would give insight into a players past injuries and how they project to affect his future. All I'll say is that health and injuries should be a far more important part of franchise and injury prone players should come with more risk than they currently do.

College tab that shows a players college stats as well as awards and accolades.

Next up we have a college tab and while this largely looks like window dressing, it can definitely be something that is useful in painting a picture of a players career arch. Maybe you have a guy like Mark Sanchez or Mitchell Trubisky who only really started for one season. Maybe you have a guy like Joe Burrow who explodes in his final college season. You can also tie stories into the awards and have more stories that revolve around things like players winning certain awards and making all-conference teams.

A stories tab that consolidates any player related stories and tweets.

And speaking of stories, we have stories tab that consolidates everything neatly into one section so that if you miss a story or tweet or just simply don't pay attention to the newsfeed you can still get an idea of the happenings of the player over the course of the year. Stories are something that I think are a great idea and desperately need to be expanded upon because when you have guys going from the dojo and weightlifting in the Olympics to playing college football every year and defensive players constantly winning the Heisman, it kind of kills the feature.

That's all I have though! Apologies if this was kind of all over the place and if I missed some things, I really rushed to write this up but thank you for your time if you made it this far. Let me know your thoughts!

I run a 4-3 and like to blitz on 1st down. I want to focus on stopping the run and getting to the QB and forcing them to throw on 3rd down. When spending team XP on my D-line (DE,DT) what what are the most recommended stats to increase for my ends and tackles?

    Last speed upgrade

    Posted: 17 Feb 2020 06:44 PM PST

My RB is almost 2 years in. Drafted him as a 72 normal dev with 96 speed and now he's a 98 superstar with 98 speed. I have one more upgrade in "Elusive back" to hit 99. If this one doesn't give me a speed upgrade to hit 99 speed, which one after would be more likely for me to find that last upgrade. Receiving back or Power back???

Man...I am just bad at M20...and I Kinda Love That I am

    Posted: 17 Feb 2020 12:59 PM PST

Been playing FB games for decades and I picked up M20 for $30 a couple weeks back. I have not played since M17. Started a franchise as the Bengals and the 1st two seasons I went 8-24. Mind you had some bad QBs, weak OL, I am just having a tough time reading the defenses correctly, throwing accurate passes, avoiding sacks, running the ball, etc....and you know...I LOVE it! I love not dominating the game and actually feeling that the better team is winning.

My Bengals were a 78 OVR and now at OVR 80 in my 3rd season. I still feel I am losing games that I should. Now once I am at an 88 or so and the team I am playing is a 78 will I have the same result...I guess time will tell.

I also play with realistic sliders and I would like to see if my sliders are making it far tougher or not by trying a game with default All Pro sliders.

Still needs far better broadcast package and deeper stats
