Bored at work, wrote the outline for what I think a better progression system would look like

    Posted: 05 Mar 2020 02:30 PM PST

My ideas for changes to the Madden Progression system.

First off, Madden should separate Development from Superstar abilities. They should have a development system that is separated to slow, average and star and superstar. As well as a split regression system slow, average and fast. When a player is drafted their development will be hidden no matter their development, there have been too many times I drafted a 75 normal and went for a second go at the position because his development was normal and I could see this right away. (I feel actual rating should also be hidden and estimated, the more scouting you did would lead to a more accurate estimation but that's a whole other topic.)

Development can be affected by three things. On field play of course (talked more in-depth later), practice and coaches. Coaches can have specific traits that can increase or decrease how well a player develops, like Kyle Shanahan increase's HB development by one level. Practice will be an actual occasion that can be played or at least simmed, allowing for actual off-season development, change in development and a risk of injuries like in real life (option to turn that off). Temporary developments like "Break out", "Comeback player" or "Sophomore Slump" etc. that may only last a season would be an interesting addition. Allowing for a large boost to overall in a great year for a player outside of his normal development range, also adding counters like a "come back to earth" where if the next season he falls off his overall can drop back down possibly leading to an inflated contract if they had just been signed which happened in the real NFL. Game day XP should be calculated by how play compares to overall. An 80 overall QB will get more XP than a 90 Overall QB for the exact same game. Or a game that would award a good chunk of XP to a 70 overall player might lead to a negative gain for a 95 overall player. Their expectations should be different so their rewards should mirror this fact. The amount of XP cost to get to the next overall will always be the same no matter development or age (as in 77 to 78 will be the same for everyone, not 60 to 61 equaling 90 to 91). What is limited by development is the possible earnable XP in a given game or practice session. So let's say normal development limits XP gain to 300 and for the next overall level you need 500 XP. This player's next game is fantastic compared to his current overall so he earns 600 XP. The excess 300 XP wouldn't just be lost; it would go towards upgrading his actual development which may need 10,000 XP to level up. This would make sure those players who are outplaying their overall are being rewarded beyond just the flat overall growth and keep from ballooning after just a few good games.

This will hopefully give a chance for a 30 year old player to actually develop if he ends up in a better situation, instead of throwing 30 TD's and 5 picks and being on the bench the next season because he's still only a 73 overall. The progression system needs to allow for overall to reflect play, even without the trigger of a "breakout season" development. Regression will be calculated by XP gain. Every overall boost you will start with a buffer amount of XP, let's say 100, there is a base XP loss every week depending upon how severe a player's regression is. For players in or entering their primes, this base XP loss will be lower than for a player who is in his 30s. For example, a 23 year old player base regression is 50 XP, a low enough amount that week's practices will probably offset this XP loss. Allowing all in game XP to go towards progressing, and if he has a poor game resulting in a -75 XP gain it probably won't hurt his overall because the base regression is so low. Now a 30 year old player might have a base regression of 250 XP, making it so that he must perform up to snuff to ensure he doesn't regress. Eventually the regression will be too much for anyone to hold back, but I feel this gives someone playing at a high level a chance to prolong their career.

Physical and intangible regression should be separated. Physical regression should be calculated on age, injuries (these can either be temporary, permanent reductions or even trigger regression to start early), injury history, fatigue (a temporary modifier), regression level and a new self-care rating that represents how well they take care of their body. There should be no way to slow physical regression. No matter how well you play you can't really stop a body from breaking down.

Intangible regression can be more dynamic. While affected by the same factors as physical, this is where the new regression system will be able to affect things. Regression level cannot Superstar abilities should be tied to overall. 75+ overall players get 1, 85+ get 2, 95+ get 3, and 99 getting 4. I don't have any abilities that should be added or how they should work. I just feel they should be much more balanced than they are now.

I don't think this is a perfect system or anything, but I feel it's a lot better than the current "well he's 29 time to dump him" mentality. Not all players regress at the same age or speed and this should be reflected. Players at 27 can become superstars. Star rookies can flame out early. The NFL is ever flowing and unpredictable and Madden does a piss poor job showing this fact. I just want more unpredictability. I feel like I've spent more time thinking about it than EA does and I wrote this in an hour while work was slow. TL;DR – Madden progression and regression is a trash system with 0 imagination behind it, and a bored monkey can come up with a better system.

Trying to spice up Madden 20's franchise mode with more in-depth scouting options.

    Posted: 05 Mar 2020 07:25 PM PST

    Sample: https://i.imgur.com/SICWcMn.png

I sort of do AAR (after-action report) based franchises in /r/NFL on the free talk thread, and I let other people rename players for me and we all kind of get invested in their careers and performance and stuff.

So I figured building a tool that would let other people scout for me (and be my scouting staff) would be awesome.

Going to let people log in, then choose a 'scouting' class (so you can be a QB scout, an O-Line scout, a RB scout, a CB scout, etc) and you'll get bonuses to scout them. Thinking of a letter-graded scouting version NCAA 14 styled.

So everybody who logs in would (for example, not real numbers):

    1. Get 1000 points.
    2. Pick a specialty (or a generalist/special teams, which would include a special skill to identify the best kick returners)
    3. If a scouted class is NOT in your specialty, it'd cost 25 points to scout 25% of their skills (randomized which ones) and you'd get LETTER grades back, not OVR numbers.
    4. Max 50% scouting if they're not in your specialty, 100% if they are, and generalists can scout everybody to 75% (and K/P to 100%)
    5. Scouting within your specialty would cost, say, 20 points per 25% (so only 80 to fully unlock their stats)
    6. Anybody you scout to 50% or more you can suggest a rename
    7. Possibility to trade in ~100 points or something for a random special ability (ie. like "locate a Star+ dev player", "locate a high OVR in a late round", etc).

If that works out, I would probably try to release something that would let you upload your exported CSV files and create your own draft (to either solo-draft or draft with friends). Just something I'm doing on my own that I thought I would share, because Madden 20 is so damn deficient. Hah.

    Removing custom player from FoF

I made a 99 OVR quarterback in the creation center and put him on the Pats to mess around with, then when I started FoF he was the starting QB. I took him off the Pats roster but he's still in FoF, how do I get rid of him?

    Madden 20 vs Previous Years?

    Posted: 05 Mar 2020 06:29 PM PST

Long story short, I've played Madden since back in the 90s. Took about a decade off and picked up 16 and 19. I thought they both were terrible, gameplay wise. I don't know how to describe it, other than the movement felt clunky compared to earlier years.

Madden 20 is on sale right now and I remember reading reviews when it came out that it was very much improved. Is the gameplay that much better? I love the "feel" of NCAA 14. I seem to also remember reading someone saying that they thought 20 felt a lot like NCAA 14. Does anyone agree?

5th straight Super Bowl with Miami Dolphins. I want 7 to have the most ever. Once I get there I will start another team. Considering Lions.

Dolphins rebuild AFC Championship game. Back up QB led us to another super bowl after the starter broke his collar bone in week 15. This made the games very exciting. It was a really fun season. The super bowl was a blowout, lost the QB to free agency after the season but was amazed what he did.

    Does brick wall do anything?

    Posted: 05 Mar 2020 09:12 PM PST

So, I've noticed that whenever I use brick wall, it never works. Isn't it supposed to break the first sack when you are in the pocket when I'm the zone? I feel like it almost makes it worse. I've never broken a sack with brick wall, ever. Am I doing something wrong or is brick wall just dumb?

    [Xbox][20/32] Knights of the Gridiron

    Posted: 05 Mar 2020 01:11 PM PST

We are looking for some active/mature users for a play league. We have begun a reboot league of a previous league, so we have a solid group of loyal members. At the moment, 12 teams are open. We are a casual league but like to keep it very organized. The biggest rules are no cheesy plays and the home team must stream via mixer (or whatever you prefer) each game in order to keep everything in check. Our main communication is discord and we advance every 48 hours. At the moment we are in the wild card round 2019 and want to fill more teams before the offseason. If you are looking for a causal new league to join with a great group of a users, you have found the right fit.

    Teams available:

Buffalo Bills, Pittsburgh Steelers, TB Buccaneers, NY Giants, NO Saints, Indianapolis Colts, Jacksonville Jaguars, LA Chargers, Chicago Bears, Minnesota Vikings, Oakland Raiders, Denver Broncos
