EA Keeps Fumbling Madden's Franchise Mode - IGN

    Posted: 21 Aug 2020 09:44 AM PDT

Congratulations EA you've made me feel nothing: A review of Madden NFL 21

    Posted: 21 Aug 2020 06:52 AM PDT

If you want the short story I'm just sad at what this game is. I've covered a few sections and have them labeled but I feel so empty after playing this game. Long story short it's going to be a pass for me. I recommend you all drop the $5 to play the trial before you buy.

I'm not a strong writer so forgive me for mistakes. I just got done with a few hours of EA access and after putting down my controller all I can think is "how did it come to this?" I'm not a fan of Madden on the current console generation, however, there was always at least a tiny part of me that was excited to boot it up and get the feel for a new year with a different changes. This year was a void as soon as I started, before I even took a snap I knew I was in for almost the exact same expirence with little or no care put into this game.

The Yard: It was a tiny bit fun but nowhere near anything that would warrent a purchase. IMO this is where the natural gameplay of Madden fits because it's more arcade like to begin with. if this came out something similar to Call of duty Warzone where it was a free to play game that just focused on microtransactions then I could see more justification for it. The only reason it was slightly enjoyable was that I had teammates who communicated with me. Overall it's frustrating when this has a more solid foundation with elements that aren't in the sim mode of the game.

MUT: I hate this mode and blame it for the state this game is in. Also I don't have any intention of buying the full game so there was no point in starting a team.

Franchise: Don't need to say anything that hasn't already been said but I'm not even going to touch this mode, not worth the trial time. If you have played Madden 20 than you know this mode. I used to love it and now it's just heart breaking what it's become.

Gameplay: I'm sure it will take a month or two before people figure out what's broken but man........how do they manage to take the little user control that I had last year and make it even more animation based? I appreciate the slowdown in gameplay as Madden 20 players cuts felt a bit too easy to pull off but I feel at this point the game is playing more than I am. A bunch and I mean a whole bunch of suction happened with player interactions and I got a slow frame rate multiple occasions. I have mixed feelings on the slow LB's and I'm still learning the DL moves but at large in open space this feels like a more controlled Madden 20 with the game taking over on player interactions. It's a sad feeling when you feel like you have no input on the outcomes and the RNG is strong with this Madden.

Presentation: What I do appreciate and my small positive take away from this game is the in-game presentation. I'm a big immersion guy and they have taken meaningful steps in this area. Pre game intros are nice and there are a variety of cutscenes in the middle of gameplay. User controlled celebrations should have not been marketed as a big feature but it's kind of nice as a small addition if it had been stated as such. It's nowhere near 2K but it's much better than any other Madden on this console Generation.

Face of the Franchise: Career Mode in sports games is my favorite mode in all of gaming. I always play every game and have sunken countless hours on multiple titles. In the Madden 21 demo I was simulating a majority of the games. This story doesn't make you care. It's so lifeless and corny. The characters are super unlikeable and this is coming from a guy who kind of liked the 2k18 MyPlayer story and at the end of the day I just don't care. I didn't want to invest myself in the story they had going on. The situations were super unrealistic from it being a packed NFL stadium for a high school state game or Snoop Dog just randomly on the field. All of it just screams cliche and I usually still love that kind of stuff but I just wanted to skip the cutscenes but I subjected myself through it. Your gameplay in the early stages doesn't even matter, you could be the worst football player ever and you still get 10 D1 offers so at that point why even have me play? The game puts you on rookie mode without the option to adjust so it turns into just chucking up the ball and pressing Y(or Triangle) and putting up +70 on everybody. I have never felt this univested in a career mode and this was the moment when it clicked that I'm not excited about this game at all.

I don't know how many will read this but CONGRATULATIONS EA I just feel empty. Football is my favorite sport(I was a college player and now coach college ball) and during my time on the trial I didn't feel excited. I had super low expectations so I didn't feel disappointed, I just felt nothing. I love this sport and this is the only major simulation option and I felt nothing. That's worse than being disappointed in my opinion. I have a few hours left so I may just test a bit more but once my time is done it's done for good. I got fooled into buying Madden 20 but not this year. If you like the game, cool. As someone who knows football well and how the game works in real life this title doesn't do anything for me. If you like football anything beyond a casual fan I can't recommend Madden 21 to you. It's so sad that this is what we have to work with. We literally have to beg for features from executives and rude devs. If you took the time to read thanks, catch me playing NCAA 14 and PS2 Madden and #FixFranchiseMode.

Who wrote Face of the Franchise???

    Posted: 21 Aug 2020 06:35 PM PDT

The writer needs to be fired or at least find something else to do. None of this makes sense.

Replace QB with heart condition. Win high school state championship. Go to college and compete with the QB from high school with heart condition. Win national title junior year. QB with heart condition is named starter for senior year. Enter draft early even though coach says I'm a third round pick at best and most likely a late round pick. Drafted in the FIRST round by the Buccaneers. Choose between Mike Evans and Rob Gronkowski as my mentor. CANNOT CHOOSE THE GREATEST QB OF ALL TIME TO BE MY MENTOR. Also, Mike Evans jersey number is 86. (for those not in the know he has worn 13 since college, maybe even longer). Half way through my rookie year as a backup QB I'm asked at a post game press conference who I think is more valuable to the team, All Pro LB Lavonte David or All Pro WR Mike Evans. I say Mike Evans because he's my mentor. The next day the Bucs trade Lavonte David based on a question a rookie backup QB was forced to answer. After filling in for two games when TOM FREAKING BRADY was injured I am named the starter for next season. Yes, TOM BRADY is now on the bench and after playing two games I am 89 overall. Then, after a preseason game in year 2 I am asked at a post game press conference what I think the team needs to improve on the most, I say wide receiver (only other choice was RB). The next day I'm called into the assistant GMs office and he says based on my press conference who should the team go out and trade for...RB Lamar Miller or TE Seth DeValve.

I found my madden 11 disc which was released 10 years and 1 week ago to this day and my Xbox 360 and started up franchise here’s some things that were in the game then but aren’t now.

    Posted: 21 Aug 2020 11:57 AM PDT

User controlled celebrations were the selling point of this game too something that they removed and added back into the game and is now the selling point 10 years later

There are "superstar abilities" which are X Factors but balanced, they weren't a NBA Jam he's on fire mechanic but rather a indication of a player who has a rating that warrants special attention. I played the Steelers week one and Troy Polamalu was all over the field making tackles but he wasn't god mode forcing 9 fumbles and picking off everything in sight like a Jamal Adams or Kam Chancellor does

Player specific animations Vince young threw the ball in the side arm fashion that so many scouts criticized when he was coming out. Brett Favre threw the ball completely different than others. I counted 40 QB specific animations which included legends and current players as well as 50 generic ones

There's doesn't seem to be a Meta play like there is in some recent maddens. Of course as the titans a CJ2K HB Slip Screen is either gonna lose you 4 yards or gain you 40 but that's because he has 98 speed. The isn't a route or play that's a automatic completion versus any defense

A really beautiful and easy to use menu that looks to be modeled after espn/nfl network

Create a team that includes some logos that are still used in the madden 21 relocation feature. You can customize your stadium and uniforms to how you please

Hall of fame players you don't have to pay real money to hopefully get in packs that you can add to teams and play with in franchise

    Stadium sponsorships and stadium upgrades

A post game run down show hosted by Charles Davis called the extra point that went in detail on games you didn't play and players of the week.

Dynamic attendance, if you went playing well your fans reflected that I played the jags and the stadium was 60% full the next week I played the Steelers and it was a sell out and my screen and my routes shook on offense

Physics based tackle very little animations that left you helpless

If you had a fast quarterback like Vince Young you weren't being chased down by 300 pound linemen in the pocket you also didn't fumble every single time you got his like in madden 21

    A more detailed scouting system

Presentation that looked exactly like the NBC Sports broadcast with Chris collinsworth and the legend Gus Johnson in the booth

Progression was based on in game stats now traits that seem random and dumb like in M21

Free agents have many factors which influence their decisions. If Tom Brady is a free agent and your the browns you will have to pay him significantly more because his "play for winner" bar is filled up

A TEAM COLLUM IN PLAYER STATS

When a player retires you actually are aware he retired. The Extra point show goes in detail about player who retire like Brett Favre and talk about his career milestones and the records he holds

Most realistic Madden ever made, for sure. Game's fine...

    Happens every year

Call me a skeptic but the difference between a company paid for their review and the actual audience response

    Posted: 21 Aug 2020 07:16 AM PDT

Thanks for the 10 hour trial and saving me $60

    Posted: 21 Aug 2020 02:59 PM PDT

This game seems like it gets worse every year it feels like a clunky mess and defense is still broken. Looks like it's time to break out the PlayStation 2. You could have defense it perfectly and still get burned. I don't know what they do to these games that makes them worse every year. I'm not even mad I'm just disappointed that I thought something would be different.

    New season, same EA

    Posted: 21 Aug 2020 04:01 PM PDT

Its great to see that EA is putting effort into the PC icon for madden. Hopefully they put more effort into the game than this

    Buy NFL 2K next year

    Posted: 21 Aug 2020 04:57 PM PDT

Who cares if it's an arcade offering. Their arcade game will probably play and feel more realistic than this garbage EA shits out. I'd say don't buy Madden but it's already proven that football gamers are crackheads so if you're going to be spending money anyways then get NFL 2K.

The Pros and Cons of FOTF

    Posted: 21 Aug 2020 05:45 PM PDT

    • It is significantly better than last year. With that said, it still has some problems.

    • You don't play every game in the regular season. It sims to critical moments which I think is cool, bc it keeps it fresh. Idk if I could play an entire 16 games. I like this change.

    • It is cool that you can switch positions if you want. I switched to WR senior year, then switched back to QB during the draft.

    • A very bad thing though, is that if you switch to WR then back to QB, it forgets what archetype you pick. I became a strong arm QB when I wanted to be an improvisor. My guy had 65 speed. Ugh.

    • You run 4.46 speed no matter what, which breaks immersion. Also, the fact that it is a 3 button mechanic, with a predetermined result, is super annoying considering they advertised doing the 40 yard dash as a big deal.

    • There's actually story after you get drafted, which is cool. It should have been like that last year, idk why the bar was set so low.

    • WR responsiveness is significantly better.

    • The Yard being tied to FOTF is pretty cool. I love when they incentivize you to do different modes. Imma try out the yard soon.

    • Glitch? I got drafted by the bears, just like everyone else apparently.

    • The combine drills are essentially skills trainer drills. Throwing into the hotspot.

    • Throwing out of sacks is cool. I hate being sucked into a sack animation when I'm already getting the ball out.

    • There is some cringe dialogue, but I don't make a big deal out of it. I'm not playing FOTF for the dialogue.

    • Press conferences are cool. They don't do much besides build your personality type, but I still enjoy them. I've been building my Leader personality because why not.

    • NFL honors is cool. I won Rookie of the Year and got to go to NFL honors.

    • In general, I think it's worth your time. Cutscenes can be skipped, if you really don't wanna hear the dialogue. It's a significant improvement from last year, and I have enjoyed playing it so far. It not perfect, for sure, but it is fun.

Madden 21 is identical to madden 20. Wait to purchase the game on next gen even tho I doubt that’ll change. EA really disappoints us ever time!!

    Kicking Meter

I know this may be small, but is anyone else struggling a little with the kick meter color? Seems so similar and hard to see the power and accuracy indicator.

I know there's a lot problems with the game in terms of gameplay and lack of features. But holy shit, this "song" is absolutely dreadful.
