    How Madden Ratings Work: Quarterbacks

    Posted: 30 May 2021 06:21 PM PDT

Had some time this weekend to tinker around with the ratings in Madden to try to pin down why some players "play better" than their rating, while others fall well short. I experimented with a quarterback in my franchise, where you can see in the player ratings edit section how different attributes impact different archetypes. I learned a lot through this process, but will really boil this down to three points: How to Isolate Ratings, Which Ratings Matter and How Much, and Invisible Ranges.

    How to Isolate Ratings

The easiest path to isolate the value of attributes to individual archetypes, at least for quarterbacks, is by turning awareness down to 1, out of a 1-99 range. Awareness alone is important enough to drop every archetype under 99 overall, the visible ceiling of Madden ratings (we'll get to this later), which allows you to test how valuable ratings are individually for each archetype. Do this by turning stats up/down from 1 to 99 to see what the value is.

Example: The Strong Arm archetype for quarterbacks values the difference between a QB with a Throw Power rating of 1 lower than the same quarterback (attributes wise, other than Throw Power) with a Throw Power rating of 99 by 64 overall points. That means every individual Throw Power gained is worth roughly 0.65 of an overall point. The exact same quarterback in an Improviser archetype only differentiates by 33 overall points between a 1 rating in Throw Power and a 99 rating in Throw Power, meaning throw power attributes are worth roughly 0.34 of an overall point for the archetype, nearly half of how it's weighted for Strong Arm quarterbacks.

Which Ratings Matter and How Much?

This is a tricky question, because the only quantifiable proof that ratings "matter" is that they're ranked in a specific way in Madden, but that doesn't mean that Madden is accurately depiciting how much ratings matters, only how important they are to an overall boost that varies within archetypes.

The short answer is there are 14 attributes that can impact a quarterback's overall rating, at least within one archetype:

Tools: Throw Power, Awareness, Speed, Agility, Acceleration, Carrying, Change of Direction

    Accuracy: Short, Medium, Long

Quarterback Ability: Throw Under Pressure, Throw on the Run, Play Action, Break Sack

I was fairly surprised that injury, toughness, stamina and even ball carrier vision was an absolute non-factor in the ratings system Madden built. For a full answer of how many overall points are available by archetype for each attribute, here is a table:

Attribute Field General Strong Arm Improviser Scrambler Archetype Avg. Archetype High
    Medium Acc 39 39 69 64 52 69
    Throw Power 49 64 33 44 48 64
    Awareness 31 23 29 13 24 23
    Deep Acc 23 35 29 0 22 35
    Short Acc 35 0 15 29 20 29
    TUP 10 20 29 13 18 20
    RUN 6 0 23 19 12 19
    Break Sack 0 6 15 19 10 19
    Speed 0 0 4 11 4 11
    Play Action 6 4 0 0 3 4
    Agility 0 0 4 4 2 4
    Acceleration 0 0 2 5 2 5
    Carrying 0 0 0 4 1 4
    COD 0 0 2 2 1 2

At this point, you're probably wondering why there are more overall points available than 87, since Madden's rating system only ranges from 12 to 99. Here's what we've been waiting for: Invisible ranges.

    Invisible Ranges

To make this quick, essentially what Madden allows you to see as a player's "overall" is their highest archetype between the visible ranges of 12 and 99. Every player with a rating higher than 99 will be called a 99. Every player with a rating lower than 12 will be called a 12. In reality, each individual archetype has it's own visible ranges for their "rating."

Based on how Madden weights ratings, here is what I expect their actual ratings range is, with the low end being every attribute being indexed as a 1 in the ratings scale and the high end being every attribute being indexed as a 99 in the rating scale.

Archetype Low End Invisible Range High End Invisible Range Overall Points Possible
    Field General -94 105 199
    Strong Arm -86 105 191
    Improviser -148 106 254
    Scrambler -123 104 227

In reality, a 13 overall Field General is actually a 107 rated quarterback out of 199-point scale in the archetype, but anything lower than 12 overall or higher than 99 overall is ignored in the visible Madden ratings scale.

The best example of how to explain Madden's rating system within the score of their archetypes is by making a quarterback who has 99 Throw Power, 99 Medium Throw Accuracy, 99 Deep Accuracy, 99 Awareness and 99 Play Action. Because of the visible range, a quarterback with these attributes (all others a rating of 1) will have the following archetype overalls: Strong Arm: 80, Field General: 54, Improviser: 12, Scrambler: 12. It's not that these attributes don't have an impact on the overalls of Improviser and Scrambler quarterbacks, just that you can't see the value of those attributes in the overall because the overall has not qualified as "visible" in an archetype.

For example: a 99 rating in those five stats combine for 121 overall points for the Scrambler archetype, but the archetype starts at -123, meaning the -2 overall rating in the Scrambler archetype appears as a 12 overall, but is really a 121 of 254 rating. In the same way, a 99 rating in those five stats combine for 165 overall points for the Strong Arm archetype, with the archetype starting at -86, appears as an 80 overall, but is really a 165 of 191 rating. In the end, the rating system only covers a 87 overall range (12 to 99) in all archetypes, with 143 invisible overall ratings (!) in the Improviser archetype.

Not really sure how to make this information actionable in either franchise or MUT, but wanted to pass it along to you guys.

Why did he not sack the qb?

    Posted: 30 May 2021 08:52 AM PDT

Why are CBs faster than WRs (that even have a faster Speed & Acceleration rating)?

    Posted: 30 May 2021 07:27 PM PDT

So all I have been testing out some theories based on running 99 speed, acceleration & agility WRs vs CBs (Overalls not touched) and they always still manage to catch up...

Do you guys know a setting on(Edit Players) or sliders in general that will make that a lot more realistic (I know that a bit of a contradiction)

I hate Madden 21, and you all know why

    Posted: 30 May 2021 11:05 PM PDT

I am guilt of feeding this beast we call EA sports, but I am done. I've finally reached the end...

I hate Madden 21. I love the idea of franchise mode, this game is nearly unplayable. For the record I'm playing on a PS5, and this game is crap. I wont buy any more EA sports games until either they lose their NFL exclusive rights and other companies can produce a competing product or until the FAN score of Madden is 80% or better. They need to address all the major game play bugs that have persisted. This game's been out 7 months and still basic stuff is broken.

I dont like anything about player and cap management in franchise. The game is full of bugs, the announcers are buggy, the game play is wonky. This is my list, feel free to pile on:

    • I can only sign a free agent for a 1 year deal.
    • you cant roll cap space over to another year.
    • you cant renegotiate a contract with a player, so as they get older and their ratings start to go down, you're stuck with bad contracts or take a massive hit when you cut guys with dead cap space.
    • After a few seasons with the draft and free agency, teams get pretty vanilla. So after a while when enough of the existing all pro players retire, the teams are all sort of similar/average because they all sort of value draft picks, trades, free agents in a similar way.
    • no waiver wire for guys getting cut (which is fine it means they're all free agents, but still would be better to have it similar to "bidding" on guys during free agency, but in this case it's based on waiver position.
    • in the draft, I seldom or never see certain positions I need for my team with the attribute required- example, I never see improviser QBs, I never see pass covering OLBs, I never see route running WRs.. It's like they forgot to program this into the player generator.
    • draft trades follow some algorithm for value but I cant say its similar to whatever the pros use as basic value tables.
    • during the draft sometimes the "hold X to sort" popup gets stuck on screen (like anywhere else I go in the game, it's stuck there) and I have to go back into my draft board and move the rows up and down to get it to go away and exit back out to the draft.
    • I cannot access or download rosters from EA. It is always telling me I'm not connected to the networks. I also get corrupted save games quite often. Wonder how much of this is PS5.
    • the trade system is broken - limiting trades to 3 players/picks per team is unreasonable. Trading away the first pick in the draft may be worth two firsts and a handful of other picks. Trading away a 99 rated QB should be worth more than whatever you can get out of 3 trade slots.
    • when I do get active in trading picks, you can only have 25 per draft, ok that's fine, super unrealistic a team in the real world would have more than that, but it actually screws up the draft because I'm trying to trade down and I hit that cap and forces other trade downs to fail if I'm picking up extra picks in the process... have to choose worse trade deals that add picks to next year's draft to avoid exceeding the limit.
    • What happens to all the undrafted guys? Do they become undrafted free agents? I dont think so. Why not? Does it crash the game to have so many players as FAs? So that makes 7th round picks valuable, but again, you cant have more than 25 picks in a draft so if you like to trade down a lot like me, it's easy to reach that cap.
    • why do draft position not update during the first few weeks of the season? so if the dolphins have the 10th pick in the draft and lose their first few games, the value of that pick somewhere along the line chagned to the alphabetical order of the team names... this eventually changes.
    • I can cause 100 fumbles a season playing with a 78 rated defense. Why? I can barely get a single int per game. I'm in All-Madden mode.
    • Sometimes the announcers talk about the away team as if they're the home team.
    • At the end of the game the announcers are still going on and on about the last inconsequential play instead of just getting to the end of game wrapup.
    • I have to complete head coach goals (like 4 Sacks in a game, rushing for 150 yards, holding the other team to so many yards) but it NEVER tells me the goals before the game, just after, unless it's tied to like an OC or DC concern.
    • I was called for delay of game while the booth was doing a review of a turnover before they came back to say if it would be upheld or not.
    • some drives go for like 75323423 minutes.. (or something stupid like that)... what gives?
    • On the first play of a game, the other team's RB ran for like 27 yards, was hit, fumbled the ball, and the ball hopped out of bounds, the offense kept possession. The game listed it as 2 runs for 54 yards.
    • My QB can miss wide open receivers and throw picks all the time... he's 78 rated with reasonably good accuracy ratings... I rarely see the CPU player do this regardless of how bad their QB is.
    • When I take control of a defender, they run the wrong way too often. Sometimes when I'm rushing the QB my guy gets locked up in a block but then starts running horizontal across the field and I cant get it turned back towards the QB.
    • When the other team's QB is scrambling, my defense stands there and watches until he's past the first down marker and then decides "hey, we should pursue".
    • practice squad guys dont actually benefit from practice that I can tell. Their names are never part of the list of players that are improving.
    • I once started a new franchise and 5 guys were on the IR list to begin with, this wasnt tied to real life injuries and they hadnt played a single snap yet.
    • Roster moves that happened in the NFL during the 2020 season are already reflected during the 2020 preseason.. So you dont really start with the preseason roster, you start with the end of the 2020 roster. For example LeVeon Bell is a FA at the beginning of the franchise, even though he was either on the Jets or on the Chiefs depending on how you look at it.
    • If I run the ball 4 times during a drive in I formation and then the 5th time I line up in I formation for a pass, the defense doesnt crowd the box anymore, they line up for pass defense.... HOW DO THEY KNOW? The personnel for both plays are the same.

I cant even remember the other dozens of stuff that drive me nuts. Sorry I know a lot of this has been said before and even if the mods kill this post I feel better having written it.

Is there anyway to not have the limit on x-factor players in a franchise mode?

    Posted: 30 May 2021 04:03 PM PDT

I'm playing a franchise using a custom roster with all-time teams, and I'm trying to have everyone who is 99 overall be an x-factor, but I've reached the cap on how many I can have (set to 75.) is there any way to uncap this?
