If you aren't aware of the history of NASCAR's video game history, it followed the same exact path as the NFL's history. In the early 2000s, NASCAR had a three headed juggernaut with their three video game franchises between EA Sports NASCAR series, Papyrus's NASCAR Racing series, and Monster Games's NASCAR Heat series. These three titles were locked in a battle year in and year out to constantly improve their games and dominate the market. Papyrus focused on pure simulation on PC while EA Sports and Monster Games battled to be the arcade king on consoles.

Nothing came close to touching Papyrus's simulation games on PC at the time. With the release of NASCAR Racing 2003 Season (nr2003), they introduced mod support allowing modders to add in other NASCAR series other than Cup including the Busch Grand Nationals series (now known as Xfinity series), Craftsman truck series, and so much more. Modders would eventually introduce Indy car, F1, dirt, and prototypes. Nr2003 became not so much a NASCAR sim, but a sim for every race series imaginable. With online private servers with up to 43 players, nothing could touch this sim, but it would be the last NASCAR title Papyrus would make. In 2004, EA gained exclusive rights resulting in Papyrus having to pull copies of nr2003 off the shelves and closing down their doors. Nr2003 immediately became abandonware, but it still supported and kept alive by the mod community to this day.

EA Sports and Monster were more competitive in the "simcade" market with both trying to have the best possible career mode. Monsters last NASCAR title was NASCAR Dirt to Daytona. It had both dirt and asphalt racing with four series: the classic Winston Racing series, Cup, Craftsman, and Featherlite series. Its career mode allowed you to climb the ranks of each series all the way up to cup. It's consider to be a one of the best NASCAR games of all time along side nr2003 and EA Sports last NASCAR title before gaining exclusive rights, NASCAR Thunder 2004.

Thunder 2004 had four series across NASCAR, Busch, Craftsman, and Featherlite with a career mode that let you become a team owner and manage every member of your team including the pit crew. You could hire drivers to compete in other series as well. Upgrading your team's cars and parts was also a huge feature of the career mode. All wrapped in having to manage your budget. There was a lot of risk/reward in it. It wasn't just a career mode, it was a team builder mode much like the once great Franchise in Madden.

Edit: NASCAR Thunder 2004 had just Cup and Busch

In just one year between 2003 and 2004, NASCAR got three of its greatest games in NASCAR Racing 2003 Season, NASCAR Thunder 2004, and NASCAR Dirt to Daytona. And then what happened? EA Sports bought out the rights. Nr2003 and DtD were bulled from shelves becoming abandonware, Papyrus folded, and Monster Games were go on to start making racing games exclusively for the Wii while they recovered.

Meanwhile, EA Sports would immediately start stripping down on their NASCAR games. With their next release with NASCAR 2005: Chase for the Cup, they stripped down the career mode removing the team builder feature. You could still hire drivers to compete in other series, but that's it as far as team building. By NASCAR 08, the game no longer even featured car manufacturers. Between 2003 and 2007, the game went from featuring four unique series to no longer even featuring manufacturers. Career mode was basically nonexistent by the time. Sound familiar?

EA would release their last main entry with NASCAR 09 although their last "NASCAR Game" would be a kart racer for the Wii. After that, EA didn't want to renew the license due to budget cuts, and fans would go almost 3 years without a NASCAR game until NASCAR the Game: 2011 released. The new series developed by Eutechnyx and published by Activision. While lacking, it was a good start for franchise that hadn't got a game in years.

But Eutechnyx wasn't the only game that got NASCAR licensing, an subscription based simulator exclusive to PC gained licensing as well. The game was iRacing. iRacing began as an online only league simulator where players started in lower classes and worked their way up the respective series against other players. iRacing was born out of the remnants of Papyrus using the base source code from nr2003 to build the foundation of iRacing while completely overhauling the graphics and sound engines. iRacing gaining NASCAR rights meant that the days of nr2003 could be relived again.

While having a great start with their series, Eutechnyx failed to take NASCAR the Game anywhere, and after their final installment in NASCAR '15, they decided to sell it to the other great former NASCAR developer, Monster Games. Monster brought with it all the assets from NASCAR '15 with their first release, NASCAR Heat Evolution, essentially being a next gen version of it on the Xbox One and PS4. It wasn't received very well as you'd expect, but featured the start of a promising career mode with you upgrading your car and garage. With Heat 2, Monster brought back split screen, the Gander truck series, and Xfinity series. Heat 3 saw the introduction of the dirt late models and drastically improved on the team builder in career mode allowing you to hire drivers as the once great NASCAR Thunder series did.

Once EA lost exclusive rights, the NASCAR series began a steady climb in quality and support. Currently between iRacing and the rebooted Heat series, NASCAR games are as close as ever to being as great as they were in the early 2000s. And with that? NASCAR ratings have been steadily improving over the past couple of years with this year seeing a massive leap in ratings. NASCAR as a whole seems to be being revived, and the same can happen to the NFL.

Although the NFL isn't hurting for ratings, Madden has obviously hurt the NFL's brand or at least appears to be. People are no longer just fed up with EA Sports and Madden, but they're fed up with the NFL for letting EA stagnate for so long. People are no longer complaining to EA, they're complaining to the NFL, and the NFL doesn't want to see people calling them out every day with new hashtags on Twitter. 2k gaining arcade rights is a first step, but the NFL needs to go further obviously. NFL doesn't need to end the Madden franchise altogether, but giving simulation rights to other developers is the next step the NFL needs to take. If NASCAR video games can be revived from the brink of death, then so can NFL video games.

There seems to be a real movement happening where tons of people are calling out EA for ruining Madden. Here is a video I made in an attempt to help that movement go further. It's called "Madden 21: The Last Madden" PS. sorry about the lame thumbnail, sadly it's needed to grow my channel

You know what would be great?

    Posted: 04 Sep 2020 08:00 PM PDT

If EA would just own up to not wanting to improve the game on a yearly basis, and just sell us roster updates in season pass formats for like $20 between legitimately new versions of the game.

And while we're at it... Announcer pack DLC. People would gladly spend $20 to have their team's radio guys instead of the 2 vanilla guys they got now.

Do not let this guy join your league. He complains about every single thing that doesn’t go his way in game and claims that everybody is a cheater and then proceeds to threaten users. I booted him before he could dump his roster.

    Who’s YOUR Dream Team announcer/commentator?

    Posted: 04 Sep 2020 05:34 PM PDT

Personally, I think Brandon Gaudin and Charles Davis stink so bad. I've never liked them and this may be an unpopular opinion but I stand by it. They do games on Sundays obviously for the real NFL, but they are c-list, borderline d-list, level guys. It's the lowest Madden has ever had it and it doesn't help that what they say never matches the level of energy that a particular play may carry. (I.e. a kick return to win the game)

My dream team? None other than Jim Nantz and Tony Romo, but ideally I'd want multiple broadcast teams kind of like what NCAA Basketball 10 had with both CBS and ESPN. Imagine having all three prime time booths in the game? This is 2020!! We shouldn't have these no names we need the best of the best, it should be expected!

Random rant, but I'm just tired of silencing them and playing to my Spotify. I didn't buy Madden this year and I endorse the movement of people not doing so until there is improvement.

Thank you. Comments would be appreciated.

Anybody else miss PATs because it glitches during your back swing?

It's happened to me at least 10 times. Now, during each PAT, I wait for it to finish glitching to start my swing.
