Overhauling Madden Stats & Abilities: QB Position

    Posted: 15 Jul 2020 08:43 PM PDT

I made a previous post HERE talking about basic stat and progression changes I think would really elevate Madden, if ever introduced. In a way, this is a sequel post talking about how I would overhaul the entire position stats, ratings, abilities, etc. for QB. One of my goals was to focus on making a QB feel like an individual asset that can be coached to develop certain skills, which in my opinion develops a player's identity and makes them less of a generic "plug and play."

For stats, I would divide theme into 3 major categories:

    • Skill Stats: Scouted by reviewing college performance stats
      • Completion %, YPA, YPG, number of deep throws, TD:INT ratio, etc.
    • Physical Stats: Scouted by reviewing combine results
      • 40 time, bench press, injury history, etc.
    • Intangible Stats: Scouted by reviewing combine interviews
      • Wonderlic test, interview question answers, etc.

Ideally, Madden in the future would allow you to scout players in such a detailed way to properly build a team with a certain style and identity. The actual stats relating to each category would be:

    • Skill Stats (QB centric):
      • Throw power, throw release*, short throw accuracy, medium throw accuracy, deep throw accuracy, throw on the run, throw under pressure, play action, break sack, footwork*, elusiveness
    • Physical Stats:
      • Strength, speed, injury, jumping, acceleration, stamina, toughness, etc.
    • Intangible Stats:
      • Awareness, consistency*, confidence, leadership*, coachability*

To define the new stats I included that have a *, these would be my definitions:

    • Throw Release: This would be how quickly your QB can get rid of the ball in terms of throwing motion. The difference between getting a pass off in 2 seconds and 4-5 seconds.
    • Footwork: This would be a stat to help with the animation of QBs establishing a solid platform before throwing. This would make a major impact during rainy/snowy games in helping QBs not slip, or help a QB make accurate throws after running out of the pocket to avoid a sack.
    • Consistency: This would be a big difference maker between the league superstars and bench warmers. Each player has talent, but can they execute their skills to their best ability on a regular basis? This would make an impact for rookies making 2/6 accurate throws vs Drew Brees making 6/6 accurate throws.
    • Leadership: This would show the QBs that can develop certain SS abilities like "protection" that enhances their OL blocking ability. Basically their ability to influence others on the field to perform better, doesn't have to be QB centric.
    • Coachability: This would partially replace scheme-fit bonuses from training. The more coachable the player the more XP they'll get from training.

While I think archetypes are a nice addition to the Madden games, most archetypes don't appropriately reflect what Madden assumes are scheme/player fits. For the QB position, I think skill stats should be organized by a skill tree in the three column inspiration of Spider-Man (PS4) would be a fresh approach. If you look at the linked image, replace innovator, defender, and webslinger with gunslinger, improviser, and field general.

    • Gunslinger: Think Brett Favre, Big Ben, and Sonny Jurgensen. These are the QBs that will sit in a pocket and destroy defenses with relentless deep throws and aggressive passing offenses.
      • An emphasis is put on throwing power, medium and deep accuracy, footwork, and throw under pressure.
    • Improviser: Think Russell Wilson, Cam Newton, and Michael Vick. These are the dual-threat QBs that will run a lot of options and keep defenses honest by manipulating their mobility outside the pocket.
      • An emphasis is put on short and medium accuracy, throw on the run, elusiveness, and throw release.
    • Field General: Think Tom Brady, Drew Brees, and Alex Smith. These are the QBs that surgically carve up or bait defenses with check downs and small gains...and then surprise with a deep ball TD. They control the game with their short/deep passing game flexibility.
      • An emphasis is put on short and deep accuracy, throw under pressure, footwork, and throw release.

Certain stats like short throw accuracy would actually be cumulative stats composed of micro-stats such as quick in, quick out, slant, curl, and comeback routes. The mastery of each route altogether would determine your QB's short throw accuracy rating. The same goes for medium and deep throw accuracy stats. This would enable more intentional development of CFM QBs drafted, as you may pick a QB that specifically has high corner, post, in/out, and slant route ratings...yet is lackluster throwing digs, fades, and go routes.

    Thoughts?

There’s been so many rating offenses so far, but I felt like this disgrace in particular needed to be brought to attention.

When you move a franchise the old unis should be your throwbacks.

    Posted: 15 Jul 2020 08:44 AM PDT

It sucks that you can only have a home and away. It'd be so easy to keep the old unis as an option. Another fix franchise thing.

All pro too easy but all madden is too hard?

    Posted: 15 Jul 2020 01:51 PM PDT

For all pro i can win the super bowl with only a couple of challenging games per year, but then i switch to all madden and throw 25 picks per game. The games are way closer but it's just not fun because the only way i can stay competing with them is by running HB stretch 30 times a game. The absolute only chance i have completing a pass is if the WR is literally wide open. Anybody have similar a experience with franchise

    Can’t force a fumble in madden 19

    Posted: 15 Jul 2020 10:00 PM PDT

I've watched plenty of videos on it, and I'm timing the hitsticks, and the strip sacks right, yet I can't make the cpu fumble. I've even turned their fumble slider to 100. Any tips?

How to get my game to the next level...

    Posted: 15 Jul 2020 09:32 PM PDT

So, I'm in my first franchise league ever with some buddies and we're in the middle of our second season. I'm strong against the CPU teams in the league but my buddies have a leg up on me. I've played Madden since it was a cartridge in my Genesis. I've always been pretty a casual player...I'll call an audible and maybe even a hot route but I don't really take on any other pre-snap adjustments, create customized playbooks or anything deeper.

I'm wondering if there is a particular part of the game that I should focus on to take a jump to the next level. What's the 20% that will get me 80% of the way to my next plateau? And do you have any resources you'd recommend to better learn that part of the game? The "the one play that..." YouTube clips aren't doing a lot for me.

    Thanks in advance!
