    Upcoming Madden Exclusive License Renewal

    As I'm sure most of you have heard, owners from around the NFL will be deciding whether or not they will renew Madden's exclusive right to produce a "realistic football simulation game." For everyone who has followed this game for the past 10-15 years an extension of this license would be disastrous not only for the NFL but for our enjoyment as well. While 2K's Basketball video games are not necessarily perfect, their franchise mode/GM mode is currently LIGHTYEARS ahead of EA's current platform.

    The reality is, if EA secures this license no company (NONE) will be able to manufacture anything resembling what we consider a AAA football game to be today until 2027 at least. It makes sense for both parties to open up this license over the next few years; for owners and the league, they have the potential to open up market competition which could secure even more sales and royalties from an open licensing agreement. A lot of us know people (myself included) who are only buying copies of this game every couple of years because the annual update really is not worth it anymore. For consumers, we have the chance to make a CHOICE, one that we haven't had since 2005. Competition in most facets of the video game market is imperative for driving innovation and a positive customer experience.

    We heard news earlier this year that 2K will be making some form of a football video game within the next year or so, but it sounds more like Backyard Baseball than anything else. If this licensing agreement is renewed, it will be a long time for any company to even imagine developing a football game; by that time, I imagine that sales of Madden will drop off as returning users continually feel as if the game has reached a point of stagnation. Let's work together by signing petitions/reaching out on Twitter/or any form of communications of your choice. I'd rather know that we as a community tried to protect the sport we love than go out with a whimper.
